I’m thrilled to share that this week’s Podcast guest is a former colleague, Paula Robbins. 

We met 23 years ago at a large corporate recruitment firm. As I became more acquainted with Paula and some of her ideologies that she applied on the job, I was perplexed. She didn’t always follow the corporate rule book. I’m not sure metrics, competition, and rolling candidates through a fast pipeline completely resonated with her. She took the time to really connect with the candidate, more time than her peers. However, this didn’t impact her metrics – in fact, her revenue numbers were exceptional.

I recall one time hearing her counsel a candidate saying, “Let’s pray about this.” As her manager, I asked her if this was appropriate in the workplace. Paula replied, “This candidate is facing some real challenges.” She shared more about this individual’s hardships and explained that the power of prayer helps in ways we can’t always see or measure. She placed her hand over her heart, which she did quite a bit, and said, ”This is a heart thing, and they needed more of that.” Wow! What I needed was more heart and less mind. I can clearly see that now.

She opened my heart and mind, and planted a seed for a more compassionate and authentic way of BE-ing. 

After working with Paula for almost three years, I left corporate America to set out on my own with another colleague to start our own recruitment company. Almost seven years later, I made another jump, this time to start my own firm. At the two-month mark in my new job, Paula’s telephone number popped in my mind. Yes, that is right, her telephone number. We hadn’t spoken in a couple of years, so I thought I’d call her to share the news. When she answered, she thought that I had heard her news. I hadn’t. She shared “I gave my notice today.” My next question was now what and why? She explained that she had to follow her heart and was pursuing a career as a Hypnotherapist. She wanted to go deeper with people and expand on her recruiting skills to connect them to their authentic selves. This way they could fully share their gifts with the world, perhaps even find more peace, meaning, and joy in their lives. Again, I thought, wow! That’s a bold move. After all, she was a single mom raising two amazing teenager daughters and would leave behind a large annual salary.

What she shared next is why I called her. I didn’t know why her number had come to me that day. She went on to explain that she had prayed and asked for financial support in supplying a part-time job to help facilitate her dream of becoming a Hypnotherapist that morning. I had been contemplating hiring somebody to help me hit the ground running. Now my prayer had also been answered. Hiring Paula to help me launch HS International was one of the best decisions I made. We worked together for a year, and during this time, I learned more about my authentic self from this collaboration. I attribute Paula to helping me walk the path I’m taking now and helping me learn to listen and trust my own intuition and higher self.
